Breaking news!

posted by: Mikko

Hello there! It’s been a while since last update, so I thought it would be good to shed some light what has been going on. Last few weeks have been very hectic for our mixing grandmaster Danko. As a band we have been doing some heavy iteration between different mixes and the final sounds ending up to “Mother War”. So basically the process has been so that Danko sends some stuff to us for a review, we make the iteration round and tell how we like it. It was not easy time, because we seemed to be quite frantic about the sound issues considering our debut album, haha!

The guitar sound was the most difficult; the original recorded sound seemed to be a little bit too “blurry” to sound as tight we wanted it to be. In the end it needed shitloads of work to sound satisfying, and to get it sound as a fucking cracker Danko had to make an additional round and re-amp the DI signals from guitar tracks. Once again, he made fantastic job, and somehow he got the guitars sound even better we thought it would be possible! After the overall sound was found we made another iteration round with the audio mastering. As the sound searching in the mixing was a nightmare, the audio mastering iteration process can be decribed as quick and easy.

As we’ve listened the audio master, we can honestly say that the outcome sounds better than we ever imagined. Even if the album sells only five pieces (to our relatives etc.), we can say with open hearts that this is the fucking best this band has ever made. Period. Nothing at this point could be done better, and we stand 100% behind the outcome.

The record making process took precisely four months. We started at 27th Dec. 2014, and we got the master in our hands 27th March 2015. There was some harsh periods, especially in the recording process (timetables, people seriously injured, technical difficulties…) and it crossed our minds that will this be ever ready? Well now it seems it will!  Our pleasure is to announce that today our audio master has been sent to Witches Brew, and from now on we only have to wait. WB will confirm the relesae date soon, but I guess it is somewhere in the end of May.

The second exclusive point in this post: Our cover art!

Even though there is some time before the release, the lyric video from “Radars Down” starts to be in a good shape. I guess we’ll release it somewhere in the middle of April.

Promo shooting sessions

posted by: Mikko

I guess this was about tenth time we tried to get our calendars fit together with our photography grandmaster Antti Kallio, and finally this is done!  The sessions were meant to be at early December 2014, but due all kinds of coincidences with recordings, health issues, personal schedules etc. we were forced to pull back these photo shooting sessions all the time. But! There is an old saying in Finnish “Hyvää kannattaa odottaa”, meaning it might be worthwile to wait when there is something good incoming.

Antti told us he knew a perfect place to take the shots, and we started our journey to drive about 150km to the Southern part of Finland. The shooting place was located at Kellokoski, and there was some old industrial buildings located in a quite compact area. Immediately when we arrived, we saw Antti had chosen a perfect place to take the shots. This was going to be METAL!

(Evil)Pete, Ykä and Aki.

(Evil)Pete, Ykä and Aki.

Our agenda was to take some group shots in different places and formations as well as personal images from everybody. Antti had really done his homework; he had already inspected the area and found several potential places to take the shots. So basically our job was just to stand in different positions and move to another location when Antti told he was ready. Easy?

Awaiting the firing squad.

Waiting for the firing squad.

Well, at least the weather tried to mess the day up. There was around zero degree celsius and quite heavy wind, so it wasn’t always easy to stand in place, at least when we took shots with T-shirts on! Any ways, we’re elated of Antti’s patience and professional grip of doing things. The session was over in one hour and the photos we saw through camera screen were amazingly good.

Tohtori captured.

So, now it’s all about getting the mixing done and preparing the artwork and shit like that. Maybe we should try to book some shows also. We’re gonna upload a lyric video in few weeks, when things have been settling down. It is gonna be from a song titled “Radars Down”, a fast and heavy piece from upcoming album.

Meanwhile you can check out Antti’s pages:

Other moms play, Mother War kills!

posted by: Pete

We just finished the recording of our debut album. Fuckin’ A! The album will be titled MOTHER WAR and the final track list is as follows:

1. Casus Belli (intro)
2. The Carpet Bombing
3. Detracked
4. Combat High
5. Calling of the Void
6. Warfiend
7. Mother War
8. …to Each Battle
9. Radars Down
10. Rising Storm

This weekend composed mainly of vocal recordings. First it was time for some MacGyver shit because Ykä needed a way to read his lyrics while growling to the mic.

Teleprompter

Teleprompter

Engineering masterminds to the rescue – an old Korg pedal box, some duct tape, a mic stand and a smart phone equals an improvised teleprompter! All rights reserved.

Saturday went fast with Ykä and Aki recording some vocals. We continued today with some more vocal parts and then went on to finish some bass sections and guitar solos. All in all a very productive weekend and like I said, we are now finished with the recordings.

Next we’ll be waiting for our mixing genius Danko to provide the first mixdown of all the tracks. I think our producer Aadolf is anxious to hear them, too. I personally am celebrating currently with a glass of Caol Ila. I am a bit tired but content.

Hopefully soon we’ll have more news for you concerning our cover art and plans for a music video. Shrapnel Storm, over and out.

Low frequencies in the studio

posted by: Pete

I just got back from the studio and I can report that all bass lines are now recorded for the album. It took most of the weekend but everything is now on tape. Well, not so much on tape as on a hard drive in ones and zeroes, but you get the picture.

I think one song even got recorded on a single take which was nice!

Naturally the weekend didn’t go without any hickups – just when we were finishing the last song for the album, the .105 string snapped from my bass. I was using almost new d’Addario RED series strings, which are very cool looking but I cannot attest to their quality now. I was of course prepared and had other strings laying around and we got even that last pesky song recorded.

Casualties of War

Every war has it’s casualties

All in all it was a productive weekend and now we have left a few finishing touches to the guitar and bass tracks, namely solos. After that the album is only missing one of it’s most critical aspects – vocals. Oh man, I can’t wait to hear the end result.

Studio update, vol. 6!

posted by: Mikko

Greetings from the SS headquarters! All the rhythm guitars are now done, so it seems we’ve proceeded to the “better half” of recordings! Tohtori Mäkitalo completed his duty today playing two last songs (out of ten) by two different amplifiers, so we can call it a day!

Currently Aki is still masterminding a couple of solos which will be included to the album. It shouldn’t be a big issue to play them, so we can say all the six strings are almost there. With this speed we can expect everything is ready with the recordings before mid-February. Phew!

At this stage we can already say something from the album sound. Even though there is nothing mixed yet, the guitar raw sound mixed together in ProTools is FRIGHTENING good! Heck, we are making something very special here. Death metal world! You’ve been warned!

Next weekend you may wonder why the earth is vibrating? Do not worry, the vibration comes from our headquarters where Pete is pummeling his bass like a maniac!

Studio update, vol. 5!

posted by: Mikko

Hi folks! It’s been one week since last update, and we’ve had some progress again! Slowly but surely. This weekend Tohtori Mäkitalo was in line, so strings were punished again. After we saw Tohtori’s mealbag, we knew this would be a productive weekend. It was loaded with non-alcoholic beer and cola, just to mention.

There was some technical challenges with the amp output levels once again, so mr. Murphy was also present. However, we managed to come out with dry feet quite quickly, and the result from the weekend was all the five songs from drop D tuning* recorded.

* Edit by Pete: Because there were only engineers present, we didn’t use mundane terms like “D” or “C” but 73.42 Hz and 64.41 Hz, respectively.

There are still another five songs left (all the stuff from drop C 64.41 Hz tuning), and we continue next weekend in our headquarters. A couple of collective shots from the sessions below:

This time duct tape was not the solution.

Studio update, vol. 4!

posted by: Mikko

This weekend our target was to finish all Aki’s guitars, and we managed to do it! It took one week (four recording days) to make it. Consensus at the studio was that the results were quite perfect.

Only one song, title track “Mother War” could be described as an obstacle in the sessions. Even though Aki himself composed the song, some parts seemed to be quite difficult. So it took quite a lot of takes to get it in perfectly. Maybe it being the title track has something to do it; I had also severe problems with drums to get it right, haha!

Anyways, it seems things are going according to schedule. By keeping this timetable, the release can be expected April-May 2015. Next weekend Tohtori Mäkitalo starts his job with six strings, while Danko is right now doing some creative mixing.

When it comes to the album, the structure seems to formulate. The preliminary song list for “Mother War”:

1. “There Will Be Blood” (intro)

2. Carpet Bombing

3. Detracked

4. “BoneHead”

5. Calling of the Void

6. Warfiend

7. Mother War

8. “Sludge”

9. Radars Down

10. Rising Storm

Total playing time will be around 38…40 minutes.

Stay metal and keep your radars up!

Guitar challenges

posted by: Pete

Earlier this week we continued with guitar tracks lead by Aki. We are using a couple of different tunings for this album and realized when Aki detuned his guitar down to C from D that our current sound gets too low for our instrument mics. We started to get distortion (not the right kind, mind you!) on the low end of the sound spectrum. Sound got a bit too muddy and the static crackling of microphones being on their very limit didn’t help. We realized that something needed to be changed.

After tinkering with our equipment and consulting our mixing mastermind, Danko, we resolved the issues by lowering the volume from the Randall amp in question and attenuating some lower frequencies. Usually this would result in loss of some “oomph” in the guitar sound, but luckily the low growl of C-tuned guitar works pretty nicely with the slight changes to the amp’s sound. I personally feel, and the general consensus at the studio seemed to agree, that the guitar sound is best that Shrapnel Storm has recorded thus far. OK, in all fairness, we’d be damned if that wasn’t the case, this being the debut and all, hahah!

I mentioned some of the equipment we are using in the making of this album, we might write a whole blog update about our mics, amps, instruments and so on later, especially if there’s interest in our readers? See you next time.

Studio update, vol. 3!

posted by: Mikko

As planned, today we started guitar recordings with Aki. We worked approx. six hours and the outcome was 32 pieces of ProTools guitar tracks, played via two different amplifiers. Means four songs by Shrapnel Storm mathematics. Better than we expected.

Aki (de)tracked.

Aki (de)tracked.

There was seen also miraculous “track-ready-by-one-take” in the sessions, so the myth is busted! Anything is possible in our camp! To be continued…
